From Still Surprised,
A Memoir of a Life in Leadership
CHAPTER ONE,
THE CRUCIBLE OF WAR In December 1944 I was the rawest second lieutenant in the
U.S. Army, a 19-year-old shavetail trying to keep my platoon (and
myself ) alive as we pursued the retreating enemy into Germany.
Greetings friends, and welcome to my first website. You might think it’s rather late in the game for such a first, but then, it took me more than 80 years to get around to writing my memoir. I have always expected another adventure around the next bend which I didn’t want to leave out. As I wrote in my memoir, Still Surprised (with Patricia Ward Biederman), I was shocked by the success of my first published attempt at storytelling, back in my undergraduate days at Antioch College, and even now I’m quite gratified that people continue to be interested in what I have to say. So thank you for coming here to learn more. Of course, this is more than the chronicle of one fortunate man; it’s filled with hundreds of colorful characters who’ve taught, influenced, and inspired me along the way. I hope you enjoy those stories as much as I have.
